This is a really important topic for everyone to understand because there is an assumption out there by the public, and perpetuate
d by the media, that poor, urban schools, teachers, and their students just don't care about education or succeeding in school. Well, this report shows a bit of what is really going on. Not only do these schools have inequitabl
e funding for teachers, materials, extracurri
cular activities
, and academic support, but also they have to deal with so much more than their counterpar
t schools in more affluent communitie
s; such as crime, malnutriti
on, family instabilit
y, lack of parent involvemen
t, and level of parent education. These factors all contribute to school readiness and achievemen
t. While school funding is only one of these factors, it is the one factor that state and federal government
s can change in positive ways to help all children. This is just another example of how inequitabl
e our society is and how it only really works well for those who already have it all.
